History

The Chapel View Apartments are nestled in the shadows of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, which has an amazing history. It opened during the Civil War as an immigrants’ church for German Catholics and has grown to become one of the cultural anchors of St. Louis and of the Dutchtown South area.  In 1863, Franciscan Priests established the church on donated land on Meramec Street – at the time, it was a rural section then called Stringtown.

First services were held in a frame home.  In 1908 the current church was built which includes the 175 foot tall twin steeples which can be seen for miles.  In April, 1994, the Church was hit by a lightning strike which caused significant damage.  It was fully restored to its original state at a significant cost.  We’re blessed to live behind such a beautiful, landmark building.
